Which of the following experiments have equally likely outcomes? Explain.
(i) A driver attempts to start a car. The car starts or does not start.
(ii) A player attempts to shoot a basketball. She/he shoots or misses the shot.
(iii) A trial is made to answer a true-false question. The answer is right or wrong.
(iv) A baby is born. It is a boy or a girl
To do:
We have to find whether the given experiments have equally likely outcomes.
Solution:
(i) A car does not start only when it has some defect. In normal situations the car starts whenever the driver attempts to start it.
Therefore,
The given experiment does not have equally likely outcomes.
(ii) The experience and player's abilities are not mentioned here. If she/he is more able then the chances of her/him shooting are higher and conversely, if she/he is less able then the chances of her/him shooting are lesser
Therefore,
The given experiment does not have equally likely outcomes.
(iii) In a true or false question there are only two outcomes, true and false.
Therefore,
The given experiment has equally likely outcomes.
(iv) A baby can either be a boy or a girl.
Therefore,
The given experiment has equally likely outcomes.
