Types of Internet Connection

In this article, we will discuss the various types of internet connections. The Internet provides customers to access and transfer data between users worldwide. Internet connections vary according to the area, availability, and usage.

The benefits of having Internet connections help people to access any people easily and quickly. Some of the ways to connect using the internet connection are Wifi (Wireless Fidelity), Broadband, Wired, and Digital Subscriber Lines (DSL). There are huge ways to connect our local system, mobile phones, or tabs to the internet with different Internet connection types.

Types of Internet Connection

There are many ways to connect to the systems. Some of them are −

  • Dial-up Connection

  • Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN)

  • DSL

  • Wifi (Wireless Fidelity)

  • Fibre Connection

  • Cable Internet Connection

  • Satellite Connection

Dial-up Connection

These are the internet connections that have been used for two to three decades. That is before the invention of mobile phones, and when the existence of telephones is in demand. So, this type of connection is given to the customers using the telephone line or called the copper wires. It uses audible frequency signals.

The phone line needs to be connected to the computer for an internet connection. This type of connection needs a modem. They are transmitted by dialing a number and converting the digital signal to an analog signal to pass them through the telephone lines. So, Dial-up connection will have a very slow internet speed. Telephone calls and an internet connection cannot be connected at the same time; neither of the services is accessible at a time.

Integrated Services Digital Systems (ISDN)

It is a circuit-switched networking technology that transmits data, Voice, and video through a digital telephone line. Apart from the DSL, here the adapter is fixed at both ends which are at the transmitter and the receiver end.

ISDNs are more popular earlier in the United States and later spread all over the world.

Digital Subscriber Line (DSL)

The Internet Connection through telephonic lines is the Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) to transmit information. The advantage is that there is no need to establish a separate connection for the internet. The Telephonic wire is connected along with this wire, so there may be some loss of using both connections together. But they are far better than dial-up and ISDN connection because they have a filtering device at the home to separate digital and audio signals. It uses the inaudible frequency.

There are two types of DSL namely, Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Lines and Symmetric Digital Subscriber Lines.

Wireless Fidelity (WIFI)

It is a type of connection that helps to connect to the internet without wires (wireless). WIFI is a wireless networking technology that helps to share or access information across the world with this connection. In this, we are wirelessly connected to a router. The WIFI is technically called IEEE 802.11 standard to access the wireless Local Area Network (LAN). They are generally the hotspots used in mobiles for WIFI connection which uses radio waves. It is advantageous over other connections because it gives the user high mobility and they are not connected via cables.

Fibre Connection

The most popular and emerging internet connection is using the Fibre optic cable. The main advantage of Fibre connection is less power loss. Traditionally copper wires are used for internet connection, now it is being replaced by fiber optic cables. The fiber comes under the broadband connection, where it provides a maximum speed of 940 Mbps (Megabits per second). These connections are suitable to use when there are multiple users connected to the same device.

Cable Internet Connection

Cable Internet connection uses the wire used for the Cable Television network rather than the telephone line. It also comes under the Broadband technology of providing Internet service. This Internet is still in existence and popular due to its low cost. It uses the modem to translate digital and analog signals.

Satellite Connection

Satellite Internet Connection is popular in areas where there are no cable and Telephone lines. It needs only an antenna to get the signals and a modem at the receiver end to access the internet.

As the Antennas are used, it needs clear climatic conditions to get the signals from the satellite.

Conclusion

Internet Connection has changed the world and the evolutions from the copper wire, then through a telephonic wire, fiber optic cable, and now to a wireless connection. Individual or business-oriented needs can be fulfilled based on the internet plans we choose. We can choose any internet connection based on the speed and the usage rate from these ways types of connections.
