Why mercury is not the hottest planet?
There is a misconception that since mercury is near to the sun, it is the hottest planet. But it is wrong. The hottest planet is venus. The main reason behind this is the greenhouse effect.
There is a thick atmosphere on the venus and it is thicker than the earth's atmosphere. But there is no atmosphere on Mars. When light falls on the mars it just bakes it and lets out of the surface. Whereas in the case of venus, the light rays cannot go out because of the thick atmosphere. All the heat radiation would be caught in the atmosphere, making Venus the hottest planet.
