Mercury is a chemical element with the symbol Hg and atomic number 80. It is commonly known as quicksilver and was formerly named hydrargyrum, which is derived from the Greek name means "liquid silver". It is a liquid metal.
Mercury can be used to make thermometers, barometers and other scientific instruments. Mercury conducts electricity and is used to make silent, position-dependent switches. Mercury vapour is used in streetlights, fluorescent lamps and advertising signs.
