Why are natural numbers called counting numbers?

Natural Numbers:

The digits 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6,7, 8, 9, and so on were used to count. These counting numbers form the set of Natural numbers.

Natural numbers are used for counting (as in "there are six coins on the table") and ordering (as in "this is the third-largest city in the country").

Therefore, counting numbers are called Natural numbers.
