Who discovered magnet?

Around 4,000 years ago a Greek shepherd named Magnes was reported to have tended his sheep in an area called Magnesia in northern Greece. He took a step and unexpectedly realized that the nails that hold his foot together and his staff's metal tip were easily sticking to the rock on which he stood! Intrigued, he started digging and found the first lodestone reported.

Henceforth, lodestones became known as "magnetite," possibly named after Magnes or Magnesia.
