What is dialysis and write any one function of an artificial kidney?


Dialysis is the procedure used in artificial kidneys to replace a non-functional or damaged kidney. In this process, the blood of the patient is allowed to pass through long cellulose tubes dipped in a tank containing dialysing solution having the same ionic concentration as Plasma. The waste substances diffuse out of the blood into the tank and the clean blood is returned back to the patient through a vein.

The function of the Artificial Kidney are given below:

  • It helps to remove harmful wastes, extra salts, and water thus controls blood pressure.
  • It maintains the balance of sodium-potassium salts in patients whose kidneys have failed.
