What is an Antigen?

An antigen is a large molecular protein that stimulates our immune system (specifically activating lymphocytes, which are the body’s infection-fighting white blood cells) to produce antibodies against it.

Generally, there are two main divisions of antigens, and they are:-

1. Foreign antigens (or heteroantigens)- They originates from outside the body.

For example- Virus, Bacteria, Protozoa, certain proteins in foods, and red blood cells from other individuals.

2. Autoantigens (or self-antigens)- They originates within the body.
