What is an aquifer?

An aquifer is an underground layer of water-bearing permeable rock, rock fractures or unconsolidated materials.

There are two general types of aquifers:

1. Confined aquifers have a layer of impenetrable rock or clay above them.

2. Unconfined aquifers lie below a permeable layer of soil.

Groundwater can be extracted using a water well. The study of water flow in aquifers and the characterization of aquifers is called hydrogeology.
