What is a gyro compass?

A gyrocompass is a type of non-magnetic compass, based on a fast-spinning disc or continuously driven gyroscope whose axis is parallel to the earth's axis of rotation which helps to find the geographical north direction automatically.

It is widely used for navigation on ships because of its two significant advantages over magnetic compass:

1. It finds true north as determined by the axis of the Earth's rotation.

2. They are unaffected by ferromagnetic materials.
