Solution:

$\frac{3x}{3} + \frac{x}{3} = 12$

$\frac{3x + x}{3} = \frac{4x}{3} = 12$

$x = 12 \times \frac{3}{4} = 3 \times 3 = 9$

So $x = 9$ is the solution
