Observe the following pattern, identify the variable and write the general rule that gives the number of legs in terms of the number of ducks.
Number of ducks | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | .... | n |
Total number of legs | 2 | 4 | 6 | 8 | .... | .... |
Given :
The number of legs is 2 when the number of ducks is 1.
The number of legs is 4 when the number of ducks is 2.
The number of legs is 6 when the number of ducks is 3.
The number of legs is 8 when the number of ducks is 4.
To do :
We have to write a general rule that gives the number of legs in terms of the number of ducks.
Solution :
Let the variable of the equation be x.
This implies,
$2=x(1)$
$x=2$
If the number of ducks is y and the number of legs is given by z, then the relation between them is given by,
$z=x(y)$
Therefore, $z=2y$ is the required equation.
