Mention rule number 2 of the Roman numeral.

Rule number 2 of the roman numerals :

If a smaller number precedes a larger number, subtract the smaller number.

For example,

$IV = 5-1 = 4$ (Since we cannot use four identical numerals in a row, 4 would not be IIII but rather IV)

$IX = 10-1 = 9$

$XL = 50-10 = 40$ (40 would not be XXXX but, rather, XL)
