How potassium is present in the plant? What is the role of potassium in the plant?
Potassium is macro-mineral present in the plant. It is absorbed by the root through water and causes water flow from the soil towards the root. As potassium ions are present in water, these ions are transported to the root through the process of mass flow. The amount of potassium ions absorbed by the root depends on its concentration in water.
In plants, potassium mineral is responsible for the movement of water, nutrients, and carbohydrates in plant tissue. It also helps in the enzyme activation causing protein, starch, and ATP production. Thus, potassium ions indirectly regulate the rate of photosynthesis.
Potassium is helpful in maintaining the turgor pressure of the cell. It also helps in strengthening the plant's ability to resist disease and increasing crop yield.
