How our ankle is a hinge joint?

Our ankle is a hinge joint (a type of synovial joint) that allows motion only in one plane.

These joints are formed when two or more bones meet and move along an axis to bend.

In the ankle, the talocrural joint is a synovial hinge joint that connects the distal ends of the tibia and fibula in the lower limb with the proximal end of the talus.

Hinge joints are assisted by other tissues, including cartilage and ligaments, to connect and bend. It is made up of an articular surface that is covered by hyaline cartilage and lubricated by synovial fluid.

Hinge joints are also present in elbows, fingers, knees, and toes.
