Explain the basis for grouping organisms into five kingdoms.

R.H. Whittaker proposed the five-kingdom classification. Kingdom classification simplifies the study of a variety of organisms. It is the grouping in a systematic manner depending on its distinctive characteristics.

It is accepted all over the world as it is based on certain characteristics of organisms such as mode of nutrition, thallus organization, cell structure, phylogenetic relationships, and reproduction.

Monera, Protista, Fungi, Plantae, and Animalia, the five kingdoms.

Classification of living organisms is important because, by studying one or two organisms from each group, identification of the characteristics and distinctive features of the entire group can be obtained.

The areas of classification and evolution are interlinked. Evolution plays an important role in the classification of organisms. The organisms are classified based on their resemblances in morphology, behavioral patterns, food habits, etc., which differ due to their evolution from a common ancestor.
