Evaluate the following and express the answer as a decimal.

$1.4 \times 0.12$

Solution:

$1.4   \times   0.12$

1.4 can be written as $\frac{14}{ 10}$   [ fraction after one point from right end, so divide by 10]

0.12  can be written as $\frac{12}{ 100}$   [ fraction after two numbers from right end, so divide by 100]

multiply now,

$\frac{14}{ 10}  \times  \frac{12}{ 100}$

Multiply numerators and denominators individually,

$\frac{14 \times 12}{10 \times 100}$

$\frac{168}{1000}$                            [1000 in the denominator, so point will be three numbers from right end]

$\frac{168}{1000}   =  0.168$    

Therefore the expression $1.4 \times 0.12$ in decimal is $0.168$
