1 - National Nutrition Week observed from 1st to 7th September
The National Nutrition Week was observed throughout the country from 1st to 7th September. The week is used to celebrate for making people to know about the proper Health by eating proper Nutrition Foods and to get them the Importance of the Nutrition to their Body.
The basic objective of this annual event is to intensify awareness generation on the importance of nutrition for health which has an impact on development, productivity, economic growth and ultimately National development.
2 - World Breastfeeding Week 2019
World Breastfeeding Week is celebrated every year from 1 to 7 August to encourage breastfeeding and improve the health of babies around the world. The Women and Child Development Ministry of India also observed the World Breastfeeding Week with a focus on protection, promotion and support of breastfeeding with the theme “Empower Parents, Enable Breastfeeding”.
World Health Organization (WHO) recommends exclusive breastfeeding starting within one hour after birth until a baby is 6 months old.
3 - International Day of Charity
The International Day of Charity is observed annually on 5th September to raise awareness and provide a common platform for charity related activities all over the world to alleviate poverty worldwide.
The International Day of Charity was declared officially by the UN General Assembly in 2012. 5th September is the selected date as it commemorates the anniversary of the passing away of Mother Teresa who worked tirelessly to overcome poverty, distress and suffering of the poorest in the world.
4 - World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD)
The World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD) is observed annually on 10th September. It is organised by the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP). The purpose of this day is to raise awareness around the globe that suicide can be prevented.
The WHO has launched a “40 seconds of action” campaign to raise awareness of the scale of suicide around the world and the role that each of us can play to help prevent it.
5 - International Literacy Day
The International Literacy Day is observed annually on 8th September to promote and support the development of literacy and skills, universal access to quality education and learning opportunities throughout people’s lives. The theme for 2019 is 'Literacy and Multilingualism'.
September 8th was proclaimed as International Literacy Day (ILD) at the 14th session of UNESCO’s General Conference on 26 October 1966. The purpose was not only to combat illiteracy but also to promote literacy as a tool that could empower individuals as well as whole communities.
6 - National Hindi Divas observed on 14th September
National Hindi Diwas was celebrated all over India on 14th September. The day is observed annually to promote and propagate the Hindi language. Its importance is demonstrated by feasts, events, competitions and other services held on this day.
The event also serves as a patriotic reminder to Hindi-speaking populations of their common roots and unity. Hindi is spoken as a mother tongue by around 258 million people and is known as the 4th largest language of the world.
7 - World Ozone Day observed
The United Nations' (UN) International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer is celebrated annually on 16th September. The theme for this year was "32 Years and Healing". India's National Cooling Action Plans has been recognized by the United Nations Secretary General, Mr António Guterres in his message on World Ozone day 2019.
The India Cooling Action seeks to (i) reduce cooling demand across sectors by 20% by 2037-38, (ii) reduce refrigerant demand by 25% by 2037-38, (iii) Reduce cooling energy requirements by 25% to 40% by 2037-38, (iv) training of 100,000 servicing sector technicians by 2022-23.
8 - International Day of Democracy observed
The United Nations’ (UN) International Day of Democracy is observed annually on 15th September to raise public awareness about democracy. The theme of International Day of Democracy 2019 is 'Participation'. According to the UN, Democracy is built on inclusion, equal treatment and participation — and it is a fundamental building block for peace, sustainable development and human rights.
The day was created by the UN General Assembly through a resolution in 2007 to strengthen national programmes devoted to the promotion and consolidation of democracy.
9 - World Bamboo Day observed on September 18
World Bamboo Day is observed every year on the 18th of September by the World Bamboo Organisation to generate awareness about conserving and promoting the bamboo industry.
The World Bamboo Organisation aims to bring the potential of bamboo to a more elevated exposure – to protect natural resources and the environment, to ensure sustainable utilisation, to promote new cultivation of bamboo for new industries in regions around the world, as well as promote traditional uses locally for community economic development.
10 - First World Patient Safety Day observed by WHO on September 17
World Health Organization (WHO) declared September 17, 2019 as the first World Patient Safety Day. On the first-ever World Patient Safety Day on 17 September 2019, WHO launched a global campaign to create awareness of patient safety and urge people to show their commitment to making healthcare safer. The theme was “Patient Safety: a global health priority” and the slogan was “Speak up for patient safety.”
The campaign aimed to mobilise patients, health workers, policymakers, academics, researchers, professional networks and the health-care industry to speak up for patient safety.
11 - International Day of Sign Languages observed
The International Day of Sign Languages was observed on 23rd September. It is observed annually. The objective of the day is to raise awareness of the importance of sign language in the full realization of the human rights of people who are deaf.
Sign languages are fully-fledged natural languages, structurally distinct from the spoken languages.The theme of the day in 2019 was “Sign Language Rights for All”. According to the World Federation of the Deaf, there are approximately 72 million deaf people worldwide. Collectively, they use more than 300 different sign languages.
12 - International Day of Peace observed
The International Day of Peace is observed annually all around the world on 21 September. The General Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples.
The Day’s theme for 2019 is ‘Climate Action for Peace’. The theme focuses on the need of combating climate change as a way to protect and promote peace throughout the world. The day is sometimes unofficially known as World Peace Day. To inaugurate the day, the United Nations Peace Bell is rung at UN Headquarters (in New York City).
13 - World Rhino Day observed
The World Rhino Day is celebrated on September 22 every year. World Rhino Day was actually started by World Wildlife Fund (WWF)-South Africa. The theme of the day in 2019 is “Five Rhino Species Forever” that celebrates both the African and Asian rhino species.
Rhinoceros are characterised by a very large horn, for which they are killed by humans. Rhino horns are bought and sold on the black market for their presumed therapeutic properties. Due to extensive poaching, three of the five rhino species are listed as critically endangered.
14 - International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons
The International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons is observed anually on 26th September across the globe. The day is celebrated in voice of global nuclear disarmament as a high priority.
There are growing variations on the future of multilateral nuclear disarmament. There are at least 17,000 nuclear weapons in the world today. The day also provides an opportunity to educate the public-and their leaders-about the real benefits of eliminating such weapons, and the social and economic costs of perpetuating them.
15 - World Maritime Day
The World Maritime Day is celebrated every year on 26th September. The World Maritime Day theme for the year is "Empowering Women in the Maritime Community". This provides an opportunity to raise awareness of the importance of gender equality, in line with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals, and to highlight the important - yet under-utilised - contribution of women within the maritime sector.
According to the United Nations, at present women represent only 2% of the world's 1.2 million seafarers and 94% of female seafarers are working in the cruise industry.
16 - World Tourism Day
World Tourism Day is commemorated each year on 27 September. Its purpose is to foster awareness among the international community of the importance of tourism and its social, cultural, political and economic value. The theme for World Tourism Day 2019 is "Tourism and jobs: a better future for all". India, for the first time, is hosting the World Tourism Day in 2019.
The day of September 27 was chosen for World Tourism Day because the Constitution of the World Tourism Organization was accepted on this day in 1970.
