Classification of Fashion Trims

Classification of Fashion Trims

The trims, which are strategically fixed on the dresses with matching color and size, do play a major role in beautifying clothes. It not only helps to fix the dress on the body properly but also enhances the overall appearance. These are used in women’s wear, men’s wear, and children’s wear.

Classification of Trims

Trims are normally classified into two major types −

  • Visible Trim − Any functional or decorative trim that can be seen with the naked eye. E.g. zippers, buttons, etc.
  • Invisible Trim − This is the kind of trim that normally cannot be seen from the naked eye. E.g. Inline lining etc.

Classification of Visible Trims

Following are some of the important visible trims −

Buttons

Buttons are classified according to their function, and some examples include buttons, beads, and linear trims. Buttons are used to join two pieces of clothing. One of these consists of two parts; one is a button, and the other is a button hole. These are usually made of wood, acrylic, metal, etc. As said, these are used for both functional and decorative purposes. These are mostly used in shirts, T-shirts, trousers, and pants. In most cases, plastic buttons are used as they are affordable. Acrylic buttons give the best look, but they are a bit costlier. Metal buttons look beautiful too, but they bear more weight and will corrode on exposure to light and water.

Beads

Like buttons, beads are also used to tie two pieces of clothing together. Not only are many pieces of beads joined together to form different structures, but these structures are tied to some parts of the garment to make them look more attractive. Usually, seed beads and glass beads are the most widely used. These are made from polished machine cut Czech glass. They are available in many shapes, like briolette, drop, round, bicone, cubic, and conical. Plastic beads are used in fabric embroidery, whereas acrylic beading is widely used in jewellery making.

Motifs

The term “motif” really means a repeated pattern. These pieces, when tied together repeatedly, form a certain pattern. These patterns are tied to some parts of the clothing to create attractive designs. Usually, these motifs may or may not create a symbolic appearance. These motifs are found in both fabricated items as well as jewellery. Not only in these, they were also used in handbags, sandals, ornaments, etc.

Threads

These threads are used to create attractive designs on a garment. Rayon threads were used for this purpose once. These are popular for their high sheen and stand up to washing and bleaching. These have natural sunlight and UV resistance. Polyester threads are taking place these days. These are usually the first choices for embroidery and designing.

Usually, people before these fastenings came into existence used to wear loose dresses as they didn’t have anything to tie their pieces of garments together. These add some attractive designs, and as said, these do have a specific function.

It was only in the early 14th century that these fastenings were used as functional trims.

Zippers

These zippers were first welcomed into the fashion industry in the early 1890’s but were accepted in the early 1930’s. These zippers were first invented by a western salesman, Whitecomb Judson. But he patented this unlocked shoe.

These were later improvised in various fields like embroidery, clothing, design of shoes etc. Zippers are typically used to unlock or lock something, most commonly a piece of clothing. These zips are available in almost every colour and design. These are mostly in the case of shirts, pants, hoodies etc. These zips can be made of brass, nickel, or aluminium.

Lacing

Lace is a piece of fabric wound in the shape of a thread which is used to tie two pieces of clothing together. In the past, these were typically worn as a matter of status, denoting one’s social standing. These days, laces are used in different kinds of women’s clothing. Frankly speaking, this lace-up kind of fashion creates a different kind of seductive attractiveness. These laces are also created in different kinds of fashion. These are woven into different forms in order to create different patterns. These laces are mostly used in women’s jackets to tie those two pieces of the jacket. The advanced forms of these laces are stripes.

Linear Trims

Linear Trims are pieces of fabric woven in a special manner that are tied at the edges to make a special and attractive design. These are usually non-functional trims. Different pieces of fabric are collected together and stitched together in such a way that it creates a certain pattern.

Not only these, there are many other trims, namely shaped edges, frills or ruffles, braids, ribbons, heat transfer prints, studs, appliques, patches, circular ruffles etc.

Conclusion

Different types of trims are mostly used to give a proper shape and design and increase the aesthetic beauty of a fabric. In a few cases, it is used to add some functionality. Among the above-discussed trims, the most popular ones are buttons, zippers, and beads, which are used in almost all of the fashion trends, like fabric trends, jewellery trends, sandal trends, etc.
