What is CBSE?

CBSE stands for Central Board of Secondary Education. It is a national board in India and many public and private schools are affiliated to the board. The Union government of India manages the CBSE board. The number of private and public schools affiliated to the CBSE board is more than 27,000 while in foreign countries, 28 schools are affiliated. CBSE has instructed the affiliated institutions to use books from NCERT only.

History of CBSE

Uttar Pradesh Board of High School and Intermediate was the first board in India that was established in 1921. Rajputana Central India and Gwalior was the controller of the board. A joint board was formed in 1929 after passing a resolution in relation to secondary education and it was named the Board of High School and Intermediate Education. The name of the board was changed in 1952 and it came to be known as CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education.

CBSE Exams

Every year high school and intermediate exams are conducted by CBSE in the month of March. Besides this, CBSE also conducts CTET (Central Teacher Ability Test) to select teachers for central schools all over India. CBSE also used to conduct the following exams −

  • Joint Entrance Examination (JEE-Mains)

  • All India Pre-Medical Test (AIPMT)

  • National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET)

  • National Eligibility Test (NET)

  • Central Universities Entrance Test

In 2014, the government formed the National Testing Agency (NTA) and now all these exams are conducted by NTA.

Eligibility criteria for taking CBSE exams

CBSE arranges exams for high school and intermediate. The exam for high school is known as AISSE and for intermediate, it is AISSCE. The National Eligibility Test (NET) is also held for the selection of teachers. The eligibility criteria for the CBSE exam are as follows −

  • Students who have taken admission in CBSE affiliated schools are eligible for the AISSE and AISSCE examinations

  • Students who completed their master’s degree and scored a minimum of 55% marks are eligible for the NET exam

Difference between ICSE and CBSE

ICSE and CBSE are two central boards that organize high school, intermediate, and other exams. ICSE stands for Indian Certificate of Secondary Education. There are many differences in both boards and we will discuss them here.

  • A wide range of subjects related to different streams are covered and they seem to be very heavy

  • Exposure to practical knowledge is limited

  • A limited number of electives to choose from
