What are the application of Digital Watermarking?

There are various application of digital watermarking which are as follows −

Broadcast Monitoring − Advertisers need to provide that they receive all of the air time which they buy from broadcasters. A non-technical approach in which human observation can be used to watch the broadcast and verify the originality by viewing or hearing is an error prone and expensive. Therefore, there should be an autorecognition system, which can save the identification codes to the broadcast.

There are several techniques like cryptography that save the recognition code in the file header but the information is unlikely to survive any type of conversion even format change.

Watermarking is apparently a suitable approach for information monitoring. The Watermark exists within the content and is adaptable with the set up base of broadcast equipment.

Although, embedding the recognition code is very complex as compared to the cryptography where the code is located in the file header. Furthermore, it can also influence the visual quality of the work. Still, there are several companies secure their broadcasts through watermarking approaches.

Ownership Assertion − A rightful owner can fetch the watermark from digital content to validate the ownership. There are limitations with textual copyright notices, as they are simply portable. Copyright printed on the physical files cannot be reproduced along with the digital content.

Transaction Tracking − Transaction tracking is also known as fingerprinting, where each copy of the work is uniquely recognized, same to the fingerprint that recognizes an individual. The watermark can record the recipient for each legitimate allocation of the work.

Visible watermarking is unfamiliar for transaction tracking but invisible watermarking is superior. For instance, in movie making, the daily videos (also known as dailies) are distributed to the persons who are concerned with the movie.

Sometimes, the videos are voiced to the press, therefore the studios need visible text on corner of the screen, which recognizes the copy of dailies. Therefore, the watermark is preferred as the text can simply be deleted.

Content Authentication − The process to validate the integrity of watermarked information and to make sure that the information is not being tampered with i.e. act of creating or confirming whether image is authentic or not.

The main use of watermarking related to authentication includes trusted cameras, video surveillance and remote sensing software, digital insurance claim evidence, journalistic photography, and digital rights administration systems.

Copy Control and Fingerprinting − Copy control and fingerprinting are used to avoid people from creating illegal copies of the content. This problem is very same to the transaction tracking of the content.

An owner can embed a watermark into digital content that recognizes the buyer of the copy (i.e. serial number). If unauthorized copies are discovered later, the owner can trace the basis of the wrongful copies.
