Why there is a kink in clinical thermometer not in a lab thermometer?

The kink in the clinical thermometer breaks the connection between the mercury in the capillary and the bulb containing it at the lower end of the thermometer and makes it easy to take the reading after it is removed from the place like under the tongue where it is held to take body temperature.

However, a laboratory thermometer has to measure temperature change continuously. The mercury level has to go up and down continuously. So, there is no kink in a laboratory thermometer.
