What is the meaning of seismic waves?


  • Seismic waves are the waves of energy caused by the sudden breaking of rock within the earth or an explosion.
  • They are the energy that travels through the Earth's layers and are a result of earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, magma movement, large landslides and large man-made explosions that give out low-frequency acoustic energy.
  • It is recorded on seismographs.
  • There are four types of seismic waves.
  • P- Waves (Primary waves).
  • S- Waves (Secondary waves).
  • L- Waves (Surface waves).
  • Rayleigh waves.
