What is the length of the nerve cell?

The longest cell in the human body is the neuron. Neurons are cells of the nervous system that process and transmit information throughout the body.

Each nerve cell consists of the cell body, which includes the nucleus, a major branching fiber (axon), and numerous smaller branching fibers (dendrites).
The longest neuron in the human body has a single threadlike projection (the axon), a few micrometers in diameter, that reaches from the base of the spine to the foot, a distance of up to one meter.

Nerve cells are long and have branches because they need more surface area to pass the signals to cell by cell. Their branches structure helps them to receive and transfer messages, thereby helping to control and coordinate the working of different parts of the body.
