What is the difference between complex and simple machines?
A simple machine is a tool that makes our task easier and faster by changing the magnitude and direction of the applied force. Thus, work is done with the use of less force.
Simple machines are useful because they reduce effort or extend the ability of people to perform tasks beyond their normal capabilities.
Simple machines that are widely used include the wheel and axle, pulley, inclined plane, screw, wedge, and lever.
They can be used for the following:
- Increase the amount of force applied to an object.
- increase the distance and speed an object moves.
- Transfer a force from one place to another.
- Change the direction of a force.
The names of a few machines found inside our house are:
Scissors, Washing machine, Sewing Machine, Fans, Motors, and refrigerators.
Complex machines are machines where two or more simple machines work together. It can perform more difficult tasks compared to simple machines.
Examples are bicycle, wheelbarrow, crane, car jack, lawn mover, etc.
