Materials have different properties like roughness, luster, transparency, solubility, flotation, attraction towards a magnet, conduction of heat, and conduction of electricity. Let us study these properties one by one. Physical properties include appearance, texture, color, odor, melting point, boiling point, density, solubility, polarity, and many others.

The properties are very useful in sorting materials into similar and dissimilar categories.  Roughness relates to the nature of the surface; is it rough or smooth; lustre, refers to shine...is the material shiny or dull looking;  what is the texture is it smooth of rough and so on. Is it a good or bad conductor of heat and electricity...and so on..
