What are the advantages of the sieving method over the sedimentation and decantation method? Through the sieving method, different sizes of substances are separated, so why we do not separate sand and water with sieving?
Sedimentation- Sedimentation is the process in which heavier particles of an insoluble solid settle down in a liquid.
Decantation- It is the process of pouring out the liquid without disturbing the sediment. Eg: sand and water
Sieving - Sieving is a method in which fine particles are sieved through holes of the sieve while the bigger impurities remain on the sieve. Eg: Sieving is used in a flour mill to separate impurities like husk and stones from wheat before grinding it.
The Sieve has minute holes in it to allow the passage of small substances. Sand is a very minute particle. In order to separate sand and water one will need a sieve that has very minute holes so that the sand doesn’t pass through it. This will make the process tedious and ineffective. So it's better to use sedimentation and decantation to separate sand and water. [Note: The size of the pore in the sieve depends on the size of the particles of the constituents to be separated.]
