How is clayey soil useful for crops?

Soil is a mixture of organic matter, minerals, gases, liquids, and organisms that together support life. It is formed through the process of weathering. Clay soil is defined as soil that is comprised of very fine mineral particles and not much organic material. The resulting soil is quite sticky since there is not much space between the mineral particles, and it does not drain well at all.

Clayey soil is useful for crops because the particle size in this soil is very fine. Due to this it has the ability to retain more amounts of water. This makes it easy for crops to access water as it is very essential for the growth of the plant.
For growing crops such as wheat, gram, and paddy, the soil that is good at retaining water and rich in organic matter is suitable. Hence, clayey soil is useful for growing such kinds of crops.
