(a) Explain the terms ‘compressions’ and ‘rarefactions’ of a wave. What type of waves consist of compressions and rarefactions?
(b) A worker lives at a distance of 1.32 km from the factory. If the speed of sound in air be 330 m/s, how much time will the sound of factory siren take to reach the worker?

(a). The part of a longitudinal wave in which the particles of the medium are closer to one another than they normally are, and there is a momentary reduction in the volume of the medium is known as a compression.

The part of a longitudinal wave in which the particles of the medium are farther apart than normal, and there is a momentary increase in the volume of the medium s known as rarefaction.

(b). Here given, distance of the worker from the factory $=1.32\ km$

$=1.32\times1000\ m=1320\ m/s$

Speed of the sound $=330\ m/s$

Therefore, time taken to reach the sound $=\frac{distance}{speed}$

$=\frac{1320\ m/s}{330\ ms}$

$=4\ s$

Thus, the sound of the factory siren will take $4\ s$ to reach the worker.
