Management societies and associations exist to promote extra professionalism in the discipline and offer instructional possibilities for his or her participants. Many societies and associations exist in the discipline of control. The Academy of Management (AOM) is the preeminent professional organization for those engaged in or interested in management research and education in the United States. It was founded in 1936 and had about 12,000 members in 2004. Most of its members are university professors who teach management or related subjects. Most academics hold PhDs in management or related disciplines. There are also a number of trainees in the academy. Although the Academy has members from all over the world, the vast majority of its members are from the United States.

AOM sponsors an annual conference each August. In this meeting, educational and professional development programs will be prepared, scientific research articles will be presented and discussed. Other activities of the Annual Meeting include meetings of various departments and stakeholders and a recruitment service that enables universities to recruit qualified candidates to fill open faculty positions in administration and related fields.

American Management Association

The American Management Association (AMA) is a major non-profit educational organization dedicated to the development of organizational effectiveness. The AMA has programs related to many areas of management practice, including general and administrative services, strategic management, human resources, information systems, manufacturing, purchasing, research and development, sales and marketing.

Founded in 1923, the AMA has approximately 25,000 members and its newsletters are mailed to 80,000 members and subscribers. Membership consists primarily of American management professionals, although it attracts members from 89 countries.

Society for Human Resource Management

The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), founded in 1948, is the largest professional association in its field. SHRM has 225,000 individual members in more than 125 countries.

The association has a network of more than 575 member associations in the United States and offices in China and India. Its members belong to local trade associations or university and university student associations.

APICS: The Association for Operations Management

The Association for Operations Management (formerly the Production and Resource Control Association) is a professional organization for those involved in or interested in operations management and production and resource management. It offers professional certifications, training programs and publications.

APICS was founded in 1957 and has active, academic and student members. Worldwide there are more than 43,000 people from 15,000 companies from almost every industry. APICS membership is concentrated in the United States.

WorldatWork

Founded in 1955, WorldatWork (formerly the American Compensation Association) is a professional organization for those involved in or interested in workers' compensation administration and benefits policies and procedures. WorldatWork provides information, training, research support and networking opportunities to its 30,000 members and clients in 75 countries.

Special membership benefits include discounts on Worldat-Work education and training programs, career placement and networking opportunities, and up-to-date information in the field through various publications.

Institute for Supply Management

The Institute of Supply Management (ISM) is a professional association for the advancement of the purchasing and supply management profession. Founded in 1915, the organization consists of more than 40,000 supply management professionals located primarily in the United States. To become a member, an individual must be involved in the procurement or materials process, work for an affiliated association, or be a full-time professor or administrator at a college or university whose teaching responsibilities include courses in procurement or materials management.
