Give two examples of periodic motion.
Periodic motion:
A motion that is regular and repeating is referred to as a periodic motion. If the motion of a moving object is repeating itself after a certain time then the motion of the object is a periodic motion. The Interval of time taken to complete each cycle of motion is called the time period of the periodic motion. Periodic motion can be used to measure time. Periodic means "repeating after a certain time interval".
Examples of periodic motion:
Following are two examples that exhibit periodic motion.
- The movement of the pendulum in a wall clock exhibits periodic motion.
- The rotation of the earth about its own axis is periodic. It repeats after every 24 hours.
- The motion of a bouncing ball is a periodic motion.
- The motion of a vibrating tuning fork is a periodic motion.
- The motion of a fan is a periodic motion.
- The motion of a child swinging is a periodic motion.
