Differences between E-paper and LCD

There are two popular display technologies namely, E-Paper and LCD. The fundamental difference between E-Paper and LCD is in their display image technology that is, the e-paper uses e-ink (electronic-ink) technology to display images, while the LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) uses liquid crystals technology to display images.

In this article, we will discuss the important differences between E-paper and LCD. But before that let us first know a bit about them individually.

What is E-Paper?

E-Paper stands for Electronic Paper. E-paper is a display technology that displays images on a screen in the same look and functionality of the conventional ink on a paper. E-paper uses microcapsules that are filled with positively charged white particles and negatively charged black particles, and these particles are suspended in a clear fluid. An electric field is used to control these negatively and positively charged particles to form patterns in order to show images, letters, and numbers on the display screen.

E-paper consumes very less electric power, hence it is best suited for device with long battery life. Also, e-paper offers high contrast ratio which increases the readability even in bright sunlight.

Today, e-paper based displays are being used in a variety of devices due their lightweight, flexibility, and thinness. E-paper displays are more environment friendly as they can be used multiple times, and no need to cut trees and the use of chemicals in their manufacturing.

What is LCD?

LCD stands for Liquid Crystal Display. LCD is a display technology mostly used in televisions, computer monitor, mobile phones, digital watches, and many other electronic devices. In LCD, images and patters are formed by illuminating a layer of liquid crystals with the help of a backlight. The illumination of liquid crystals can be manipulated by an electric field by controlling the amount of light passing through the display.

LCD displays can be manufactured in various sizes and screen resolutions. They can display full color images and video graphics. LCD displays are best suited for displaying fast-moving objects due their high refresh rate and response time. However, LCD displays consumes more power as compared to e-paper displays. Also, they cannot be used in bright sunlight because of their reflective surface.

LCD displays do not have image persistence characteristics. Therefore, they require constant power to show an image on the screen.

E-paper displays are more environment friendly because they do not need cut to trees and the use of harmful chemicals.

LCD displays impact environment in several ways such as their manufacturing process involves the use of toxic chemicals.


E-paper displays are used in various electronic devices such as e-readers, digital signage, electronic price tags, etc.

LCD displays are widely used in TVs, monitors, laptop screens, mobile phones, etc.


E-paper and LCD are the two commonly used display technologies, however they are absolutely different from each other as described in the above table.

The most significant difference between e-paper and LCD is that e-paper displays are based on electronic ink technology, while LCD displays are based on liquid crystals. Another major difference is that e-paper displays consumes very less power than LCD displays.
