(i) An element is a substance that cannot be split up into two or more simpler substances by chemical methods. It contains only one type of atom. 
Examples of elements in fig 2.2: Cu, Zn, F2, O2, diamond (C), Hg
(ii) A compound is a substance consisting of two or more elements combined chemically in a fixed proportion by mass.
Examples of compounds in fig 2.2: sand, wood, NaCl, CaCO3, H2O
