What are the various Smartphone Sensors?

The different types of sensors used in our smartphone are as follows −

  • Monitor sensor
  • Environmental sensor
  • Positional sensor
  • Ambient light
  • Proximity sensor
  • Gravity sensor
  • Gyroscope

Let us discuss each sensor in detail.

Motion Sensor

It helps us to monitor the motion or movement of a smartphone. It measure the acceleration and gravitational forces on all the axis of the device

For example: Accelerometer, Gyroscopes

The abilities of Motion sensor that allows us to accomplish are given below −

  • The Motion sensors can be used for determining all the movements of the phone, like tilt, shake, rotation, or swing.

  • Along with positional sensors, it can be used to accomplish the position of a phone relative to the world's frame of reference.

Environmental Sensor

It helps us to measure all environmental properties, like ambient air temperature and ambient pressure, illumination around, and also humidity near your phone.

For Example − Barometers, Photometers, and Thermometers

The abilities of environmental sensor are as follows −

  • Environmental sensor helps us to determine the environmental conditions around the phone, like temperature and pressure.

  • We can set the auto brightness of the phone's screen as illumination around the phone can be determined with the environmental sensor.

Positional Sensor

It helps us to measure the physical position of a device

For example: Orientation sensors and Magnetometers

The abilities of positional sensor are as follows −

  • With the use of this sensor, a phone can determine which way is north.

  • Positional sensors help to run GPS on a phone, which in turn can be used for navigation of the device (in terms person's navigation)

Ambient light

This sensor is used to adjust the brightness of the screen as per the comfort of the user. It supports AWB while capturing pictures as well.

Proximity sensor

This sensor is used to identify any objects nearby. The device will automatically turn off with this sensor when there is anything near to the ear.

Gravity sensor

This sensor is used so that switching between portrait and landscape is easy. It also helps in counting steps, viewing orientation, identifying motion gestures, etc.

Gyroscope

This sensor is used in somatic games. It is used to help the device move and with this motion offers a switch in the game. It is used in GPS navigation in GPS.

Technology Capabilities

Let us see the Technology capabilities that benefit us if placed on our smartphone.

Indoor positioning system

At huge area places like malls, hospitals, bungalows, this system will be useful.

The advantages of indoor positioning system are as follows −

  • It will be easy to get directions at the big area places.

  • It will be good to know the exact position of the phone when you are at such places, which in turn helps you to save your time.

Artificial Intelligence

A phone doesn't know whether the user is male or female, how is the mood of the user. So we cannot say our phone is the smartphone.

To make the phone a smartphone artificial intelligence is a necessity.

The advantages of artificial intelligence are as follows −

  • The phone can sense the mood of the user, and help him to do much better. (when user is tired play soothing music)

  • A phone can sense the day to day activities of a user and can help him to do these activities much faster which will save users time. For example, usually at 4 pm, the user checks Facebook, download Facebook data in advance.
