What are the differences between Microsoft Teams and Skype?

Microsoft Team is a business communication platform which is developed by Microsoft team as a part of the Microsoft 365 family of products. It offers workspace chat, video conferencing, file storage and application integration.

Skype is a Microsoft product which offers free video and audio calling which also has the ability to call landlines and smartphones with paid services anywhere in the world. It has a first mover advantage. It came into existence before the Facebook messenger.


The major differences between Microsoft Team and Skype are as follows −

This is a video conferencing and collaboration tool which exists in 2017, Now it is the most used tool in all over the world.It is a popular peer-to-peer internet telephony application since 2003.
Microsoft teams provide full access to private or group chat history unless they are deleted individually.The users’ conversation history will store up to 30 days, But the conversion history in Skype for business in office 365 cannot save.
The teams are available as a free stand-alone app we can download from the web or as a part of Microsoft 365 suite of products.The basic functions are free in Skype. One can use those functions free of cost but for a business account it will cost you.
Even though you're offline by usingteams, we can send and receive files through SharePoint.Skype can send files only if the sender and receiver are online at same time.
The teams can also be used in mobile more efficiently and it is reliable.We cannot handle Skype meetings more reliably on mobile because the network connectivity often struggles.
Microsoft team is relatively new video conferencing and collaboration solutionSkype has been available for more than a decade and half.

Microsoft teams are better than Skype for the following reasons −

  • Skype is useful for smaller businesses having 20 or less than 20 employees while Microsoft team allows connecting a team of 10 to 10,000 people at the same time.

  • Skype is just unified software while Microsoft team is a collaborative one that allows people not just to communicate but collaborate and work.

  • Both the platforms allow members to chat online but the history of all the chats are saved in Microsoft team, not in Skype.
