There are many video players in the market; some are with rich features (support any kind of video/audio files) and some are with less features (don’t support all video/audio files). VLC is also a free open source video player comes with in-rich features, supports any kind of video files. In the market place, this software alone stands in front of other software as a competitor. Although it is free, some people use it as a simple video player, but for some people; it plays as important role (who are well-know of its in-rich features).

Download/Save Online Videos

You can also use VLC to play and download online videos. It offers the full suite of tools to operate video playback or save them for offline use.

To view an online video, go to Media –> Open Network Stream. The Open media dialog box opens; go the Network tab, enter the URL of the video and then click Play. To save the file, instead of Play, choose Convert from the bottom of the window.

Capture the currently playing video/audio

VLC also provides an option to capture the video/audio that you are playing. To do this, click on View –> Advanced Controls will display additional buttons in the bottom of the VLC media player. If you like something, while playing a media file, click on the Record button to start recording and to stop recording process again press the same “Record” button. All recording video will save in the “Videos” folder and all recording audio in the “Music” folder. For Mac version, go to the menu bar and click on Playback –> Record or use the shortcut CMD + ALT + R.

Convert/Save Media Files

VLC provides ability to convert media files into various formats, facilitates you to covert exactly how you want or you can simply use a given preset.

To do so, open the VLC media player, go to Media –> Convert/Save, the “Open media” dialog box opens.

Click on “Add” to add a file on which want to work on and then click on Convert/Save from the bottom of the dialog box. From here you will select the desired codec to convert.

Rip a DVD into computer

Using VLC, you can also rip your DVD into your computer. A very simple way to create backup through DVD and you can view video/audio when physical disc doesn’t work.

To do so, go to Media –> Convert/Save the Disc tab. From the Disc Selection, select the media disc you want to use for recording, check the “No disc menu, choose the Disc device, and then click on Convert/Save. Select the codec you wish to save in and save it with the extension that is well-matched with your codec.

Adjustments and Effects the Video and Audio files

VLC provides many tools to capture/edit any kind of media files. If you want to see those tools, go to Tools –> Effects and Filters will open “Adjustments and Effects” dialog box. In this dialog box, Audio and Video Effects tabs contain many tools to effect the audio/video file currently running on the VLC player. The Video Effects tab contains tools to adjust colors, crop, rotate video, add filters, etc. The Video Effects tab contains the usual equalizers to tune your music.

Podcast your video/audio

VLC is also a very simple podcast subscription app. Using this app, you can select your favourite Video/audio podcast and can play directly from this app. To get this podcast, go to the playlist from side bar and then go to Internet to get podcast option. Keep your mouse cursor over it will display a + option, click this option to add the RSS for the podcast. On the Mac, go to podcast –> Subscribe to add the RSS URL.

Record video of the Desktop

VLC can also record a video of your desktop, for that VLC works as a screen recorder. To enable this recording process, just go to Open Media –> Convert / Save, the Open media dialog box opens, go to the Capture Device tab –> Capture mode drop down menu and then choose Desktop. Set your frame rate form Desired frame rate for the capture and click Convert / Save. At last, choose your codec and the destination and click on “Start” and to stop recording, click on the “Stop” button.

Record/Capture with Webcam

You can also use webcam to record a video in VLC. To do so, go to the Media –> Open Capture Device to choose “DirectShow” from the “Capture mode” drop menu, select the video and audio device from where it will capture the video, click on “Play” and then VLC will stream from your webcam.
