Two elements are represented as 17X35 and 12Y24.
a) Which of these elements will lose electrons and gain electrons ?b) What is the number of electrons an atom loses, gains or shares called?c) Write electronic configuration of X and Y.

(a) For X, atomic number is 17. So it is Chlorine. It is highly electronegative and it gains electrons.
For Y, atomic number is 12. So it is Magnesium. Magnesium will lose electrons

 (b) Valency is the number of electrons an atom loses, gains or shares

(c) The atom X has electronic configuration:

KLM
287

and the atom Y has electronic configuration:

KLM
282

The stability of the atom can be achieved by noble gas configuration, i.e. the valence shell must contain 8 electrons, the element X can gain 1 electrons to get an octet in M shell and Y can lose 2 electrons to get an octet in L shell.
