Solution :
Numbers to the left of zero have a negative sign and the numbers to the right of zero have a positive sign.
(a) 6 steps to the left of zero is $-6$.
Therefore, $a = -6$.
(b) 8 steps to the right of zero is $+8$.
Therefore, $b = +8$.
