Major Glaciers of Asia
There is a great variety of glaciers across Asia, each with distinctive characteristics and significance. These frozen beauties, which range in size from the enormous Siachen Glacier in the Himalayas to the immaculate Chong Kemin Glacier in the Tien Shan mountains, display the breath-taking splendour of the area. These large glaciers of Asia are not only beautiful wonders but also essential components of the delicate balance of our planet due to their critical function in maintaining ecosystems and providing water sources.
Features of Major Glaciers of Asia
Here are the descriptions of major glaciers of Asia −
Siachen Glacier
In the eastern Karakoram range of the Himalayas, there is a glacier called the Siachen Glacier. It is the second-longest glacier in the world's non-polar regions and the longest in the Karakoram. Since 1984, India has been in charge of Ladakh, a union territory in the Kashmir area that includes the entire Siachen Glacier and all-important crossings. The Siachen Glacier is located in the heavily glaciated region of the Karakoram, frequently referred to as the "Third Pole," immediately south of the large drainage divide that divides the Eurasian Plate from the Indian subcontinent. The main Karakoram range to the east and the Saltoro Ridge directly to the west are separated by the glacier.
Gangotri Glacier
In an area that borders Tibet, Gangotri is situated in Uttarkashi District, Uttarakhand, India. This glacier, one of the Ganges' main sources, is more than 27 cubic kilometres in size. The glacier is between 2 and 4 km (1 and 2 mi) wide and 30 km (19 miles) long. The Gangotri Group of summits surrounds the glacier and includes several summits with notoriously difficult ascent routes, including Shivling, Thalay Sagar, Meru, and Bhagirathi III. It starts in a cirque beneath Chaukhamba, the group's tallest summit, and flows about northwest from there.
Baltoro Glacier
One of the longest glaciers outside of the polar regions is the 63 km (39 mi) long Baltoro Glacier. It is situated in Pakistan's Gilgit-Baltistan, which is home to some of the highest mountains in the world, in the Shigar District. The glacier is located close to K2, the highest mountain in the area at 8,611 meters (28,251 ft), in the Karakoram Mountain range. There are three further mountains within 20 kilometres that are all higher than 8,000 meters. It is situated in Pakistan's Gilgit-Baltistan province's Shigar District. A section of the Karakoram Mountain range is traversed by it.
Khumbu Glacier
The Khumbu Glacier is situated between Mount Everest and the Lhotse-Nuptse ridge in the Khumbu area of northeastern Nepal. It is the highest glacier in the world, rising from a terminal elevation of 4,900 meters (16,100 feet) to a source elevation of 7,600 meters (24,900 feet). The final section of the trail to one of the Everest Base Camps follows the Khumbu Glacier. The glacier's beginning lies in the Western Cwm, close to Everest. At the western end of the lower Western Cwm, the glacier includes a sizable icefall known as the Khumbu Icefall. The first significant challenge—and one of the riskier ones—on the traditional south col route to the summit of Everest is this icefall. Additionally, it is Nepal's biggest glacier.
Fedchenko Glacier
A huge glacier in Tajikistan's north-central Gorno-Badakhshan province's Yazgulem Range of the Pamir Mountains is known as the Fedchenko Glacier. The glacier is long and slender, currently covering more than 700 square kilometres (270 sq. mi) and stretching for 77 kilometres (48 mi). Outside of the polar regions, it is the longest glacier in the world. The Fedchenko Glacier has a maximum thickness of 1,000 meters (3,300 feet), and it has dozens of tributaries that together make up 144 cubic kilometres (35 cubic miles), which is roughly a third of Lake Erie's volume.
Hispar Glacier
The Hispar Glacier, which is 49 km (30 mi) long, joins the Biafo Glacier, which is 67 km (42 mi) long, at the Hispar La (Pass), which is located at an elevation of 5,128 m (16,824 ft), to form the longest glacial system outside of the polar regions. The glacier's meltwater gives rise to the Hispar River, a tributary of the Hunza River.
Zemu Glacier
The Zemu Glacier is the biggest glacier in that region of the Eastern Himalayas. It is situated at the foot of Kangchenjunga in Sikkim, India, and is around 26 kilometres (16 miles) long. The third-highest peak in the world, Kanchenjunga, has a glacier on its east side called the Zemu Glacier. Numerous rivers receive their water from the glacier because it feeds them when it melts. Recent years have seen a noticeable retreat of the Zemu Glacier. On average 150 feet high, the lateral moraine ridges flank the glacier on both sides.
Biafo Glacier
The Shigar district of Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan, contains the long glacier known as the Biafo Glacier, which is part of the Karakoram Mountain range. The Biafo Glacier, one of the biggest glaciers in the Karakorams, flows south-east from the mountain's centre. There are 853 km2 in its basin, 628 km2 of which are permanently covered in snow and ice, with the accumulation zone constituting 68% of the glacier surface. The Biafo Glacier is the second-longest glacier in the world outside of the polar regions, trailing only the 77 km (48 mi) long Fedchenko Glacier in Tajikistan and the 70 km (43 mi) long Siachen Glacier in India.
Abramov Glacier
In Tajikistan, Central Asia's Pamir Mountains, there is a magnificent glacier called the Abramov Glacier. It is recognized for its breath-taking beauty and magnificence and is nestled in the Akademiya Nauk Range. The glacier covers a huge area and is home to exquisite ice formations, cliffs made of towering ice, and crevasses that sparkle with azure water. It is fuelled by the build-up of snow and ice throughout the course of the year, resulting in a stunning frozen environment. The Abramov Glacier supports the biological balance of the area and provides a crucial water source for neighbouring villages. It offers as evidence of the breathtaking natural splendour located in the Pamir Mountains' interior.
Chong Kemin Glacier
Beautiful Chong Kemin Glacier may be found in Kyrgyzstan, specifically in the Tien Shan mountain region of Central Asia. This glacier is a remarkable example of nature, with its broad area of sparkling ice and angular ice structures. It's a part of the greater Chong Kemin Valley, known for its unspoiled wildness and breathtaking alpine views. The Chong Kemin Glacier, which provides a crucial water source for the neighbourhood environment, is supplied by the buildup of snow and ice. Adventurers and environment lovers who want to view the grandeur of this frozen wonder in the Tien Shan mountains are drawn to it by its splendour.
