How to list column header names in Excel?

In this article, we will look at the steps on how to list column header names in a single column in Excel. This application is a useful tool for analyzing and carrying out complex calculations for numerical data. Excel provides many formulas and functions that aid in analyzing numerical data as well as visualizing this data with the help of various charts and plots. Excel is a spreadsheet application that is divided into rows and columns. Each column is given a heading or a header name. This heading represents a specific detail that is stored in that column. For example, column header names can be Serial Number, Cost, etc.

Let us consider a spreadsheet named Student_Sample_Data. This spreadsheet contains data about students’ total marks, percentage obtained, and the final grade.

As seen from the image, all the necessary details of 10 students are present in this spreadsheet.

Examples

Now, we need to list all the headings or the header names in a single column.

There are two ways to approach this task.

Example 1− Using paste special option

Example 2− Using third-party software called Kutools

Example 1: Using paste special option.

Let us see how to list all the header names using paste special.

Step 1

Select all the header names.

Step 2

Copy all the header names using right-click option as highlighted in the below image.

Step 3

Click on a blank cell either in the same spreadsheet or a different spreadsheet. Right click on that blank cell and then click on the Paste special option. These three options will be visible – Paste, Paste Values, and Other Paste Special options.

Step 4

Under the Paste option, click on the Transpose option. All the column header names that were copied will be pasted into a single column starting from this cell.

As seen from the image, all the header names are displayed in a single column starting from the cell which was selected.

Example 2: Using Kutools

Let us see how to list all the header names using Kutools. Kutools is an add-on software that is integrated with Excel.

Step 1

Click on the Kutools tab as shown in the below image −

Step 2

Click on the Navigation tab.

Step 3

A Navigation pane will open on the left side of the worksheet. Click on the Columns tab. This tab will display the sequence of all the columns along with their header names.

As seen from the above image, column header names are displayed on the pane on the left side.

Note − Before using this option to list the column header names, it is mandatory to install Kutools for Excel. This third-party software can be easily searched on Google and downloaded from there. When this software is downloaded, it will automatically be integrated into the Excel application.

Conclusion

In this article, we have seen two different examples to display the header names in a column. The two examples are completely different in the way that the first approach uses the in-built functionality of Excel while the second approach uses a third-party software Kutools.
