How to change the Text color of Menu item in Android using Kotlin?


This example demonstrates how to change the Text color of Menu item in Android using Kotlin.

Step 1 − Create a new project in Android Studio, go to File ⇒ New Project and fill all required details to create a new project.

Step 2 − Add the following code to res/layout/activity_main.xml.

Step 3 − Add the following code to res/menu/menu_items.xml

Step 4 − Add the following code to res/values/styles.xml

<resources>
   <!-- Base application theme. -->
   <style name="AppTheme" parent="Theme.AppCompat.Light.DarkActionBar">
      <!-- Customize your theme here. -->
      <item name="colorPrimary">@color/colorPrimary</item>
      <item name="colorPrimaryDark">@color/colorPrimaryDark</item>

      <item name="android:itemBackground">@color/skyBlue</item>
      <item name="android:textColor">#ff000f</item>
   </style>
</resources>

Step 5 − Add the following code to res/values/colors.xml

<resources>
   <color name="colorPrimary">#6200EE</color>
   <color name="colorPrimaryDark">#3700B3</color>
   <color name="colorAccent">#03DAC5</color>
   <color name="skyBlue">#87CEEB</color>
</resources>

Step 6 − Add the following code to src/MainActivity.kt

   override fun onCreate(savedInstanceState: Bundle?) {
      super.onCreate(savedInstanceState)

   override fun onCreateOptionsMenu(menu: Menu?): Boolean {
      menuInflater.inflate(R.menu.menu, menu)

   }

      return when (item.itemId) {
         R.id.option_menu_item_1 -> true
         R.id.option_menu_item_2 -> true
         R.id.option_menu_item_3 -> true
         else -> super.onOptionsItemSelected(item)
      }
   }
}

Step 7 − Add the following code to androidManifest.xml

      android:icon="@mipmap/ic_launcher"
      android:label="@string/app_name"

            <action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" />

   </application>
</manifest>

Let's try to run your application. I assume you have connected your actual Android Mobile device with your computer. To run the app from android studio, open one of your project's activity files and click the Run Play Icon icon from the toolbar. Select your mobile device as an option and then check your mobile device which will display your default screen
