How to Automatically Insert a Decimal Point to a Number in Excel?

Let us assume we have a situation where we need to enter decimal numbers that contain an equal number of numbers after the decimal point. If you try to enter a dot for every number, it can be a time-consuming process. We can automate this process just by making some changes to the Excel file. This tutorial will help you understand how we can automatically insert a decimal point in a number in Excel. Let us assume, for example, that the decimal point will be inserted before the three digits of the number.

Automatically Insert a Decimal Point to a Number in Excel

Here, we will first open the Excel advanced options and then change the decimal point location. Let's take a look at an easy way to automatically add a decimal point to a number in Excel.

Step 1

Consider creating a new Excel sheet, then clicking on file in the Excel ribbon and selecting the option shown in the image below.

Step 2

After that, a new pop-up menu called "Excel Options" will appear. Click "Advance" in the pop-up window, then check the box next to "Automatically insert the decimal point," change the places to three, and click "OK." The pop-up window will close, and the Excel sheet will be successfully updated.

Step 3

When we try to enter any numbers in the sheets, they will be automatically converted into a floating number, and a decimal point will be inserted before the three digits as shown in the below image, and our final output will be remarkably similar to the data shown in the below image.

This process will only work for the newly added data to the sheet; for the numbers that already exist in the sheet, the changes are now applied, and when we enter any text formats, they will remain the same.

Conclusion

We used a simple example in this tutorial to show how we can automatically add a decimal point to a number in Excel.
