How to Add Subtotals and Total Row in a Table in Excel?

Performing the addition and subtraction operations column-wise in Excel is a very easy process, but performing those same operations in a row of a table is a complex problem. It is a complex problem because we can’t use the formulas in the case of row operations. The formulas can only be used to solve problems in columns. So let us see a simple process to show the total and subtotal of a row at the bottom of the table.

Adding Total Row in a Table

Here we will use the right-click menu to add the total row. Let us go through the simple process to know how we can add the total row to the table in Excel.

Step 1

Consider an Excel sheet, then create a table of numerals to which we want to add the total. We can create a table using the tables under the insert section.

To create the table, select the data and click "Insert," then select "Table."

Let us assume we have the data, which is shown in the below screenshot.

Step 2

Now, right-click any of the cells to bring up the menu shown below.

Then select the table and click on the Total Row as shown in the below row.

Then the total of the rows will be displayed, as shown below.

Step 3

If the value seems different, click the right end of the total to bring up a menu, then select sum.

Adding Subtotal Row in a Table

Here we will convert the table to a range and then add the subtotal row. Let us look at a simple procedure for adding a subtotal row to a table in Excel.

Step1

Right-click on any of the cells that belong to the table to get the menu, click on table, and then convert to range.

The system prompts you for confirmation, and you click yes.

Step 2

Now, click on data to sort one of the cells in a row for which you want to add a subtotal.

Then the data will be shown where the same kind of items are grouped together, as shown in the below figure.

Step 3

Now, click on the subtotal present under the outline section under the data menu, and a menu will be shown as shown in the below image.

Step 4

Then To get our final result, set each point as an item, select the operator as Sum, add the subtotal to the amount, and click OK.

Conclusion

In this tutorial, we used a simple example to demonstrate how we can add the total and subtotal rows in the table in Excel to highlight a particular set of data.
