GATE Exams: Importance, Benefits and Guidance

In this emerging world of huge opportunities, there are so many paths we can travel through and start our careers. But having a bright and a beautiful future is something everyone wants. So, one must be quite clear about his/her interests. And engineering could be one such interest. Many people today in India opt for engineering as their undergraduate program because of the wide scope in the engineering sector. Engineering encompasses almost all areas of employment and certainly provides a plethora of opportunities. In a developing country like India, there is a need for enthusiastic, energetic, passionate and dynamic engineers who can shape India to emerge as a better nation.

There are several fields in engineering such as – Electricals, Electronics and Communication, Instrumentation, Mathematics, Physics, Production and Industrial, Textile and Industrial, Engineering Sciences, Life Sciences, Computer Science and Information Technology, Aeronautics, Architectural and Planning AR, Civil, Chemical, Mechanics, Metallurgical, Aerospace, Agricultural, Biochemical, Biotechnology, Mining and many more. All these branches open up career plans to work in many reputed companies not only in India but also throughout the world. But to aim and achieve these, students must have a strong grip over their respective fields of study. And one of the platforms which tests the candidates’ mettle is GATE.

GATE – Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering

GATE is conducted for the students all over India by IISc- Indian Institute of Science in collaboration with seven Indian Institutes of Technology- IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Kanpur, IIT-Kharagpur, IIT-Madras and IIT-Roorkee. The score obtained in GATE helps the students secure admissions to M.E, M.Tech, MS and even direct PhD in many of the reputed universities in India funded by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, India. And even some of the PSUs – Public Sector Undertakings also consider GATE as evaluation criteria to provide offers to the candidates. Some of such PSUs include BHEL, NTPC, BARC etc.

Gearing up for GATE

As the syllabus of GATE mainly includes the subjects in the respective areas of engineering, it is very essential for the candidates to concentrate on their core subjects. Apart from this, Reasoning and Aptitude section must also be worked upon. Revision also must be given priority, and it can be done by glancing through the collected notes and memorizing all the important points. Solving the previous year question papers gives the students an idea on how the questions may be posed and what would be the exact and optimal way of evaluating the answer. Attempting mock GATE exams will also brush up our minds and makes us acquainted with all the topics that may be covered in the main GATE examination.

Important Dates

GATE is usually conducted in the last week of January or in the first week of February. It is thus suggested to allot at-least nine months for GATE preparation. Enroll yourself in a reputed coaching center. The first four months should be spent to secure a vice-like grip on all fundamentals of the subjects. Once you master all the fundamentals, it is imperative to assess yourself by taking chapter-wise tests. Finish attempting your chapter-wise tests in the next two months. In the next 45 days, complete taking all the sectional tests and analyze your mistakes. Keep learning and start giving mocks GATE. Ensure that you give at-least 10 mock GATEs before giving the original GATE.

Smart Tips to Study

  • It is always better to study at the same place and same time every day as it is a better practice to stay in the same environment to concentrate on things properly.
  • Prepare a timetable and adhere to the schedule strictly.
  • Kick-start your preparation by practicing the difficult topics first and then study all the topics together.
  • Distance yourselves from all the distractions during the preparation time. Prioritize things keeping your future in view rather than the present.
  • Practice things regularly and avoid marathon study schedules.
  • Prepare instant notes and do not procrastinate.
  • Plan to manage your time properly and allot time to study all the topics concerned.
  • Do not neglect your health by skipping your food or skipping your sleep schedules.
  • Keep your mind sharp and active by making use of smart tips to nurture your memory.
  • Always remember that there is never an easy way to reach our goals, so do not be in search of easier ways of attaining success.

Result Evaluation Criteria

Every qualified candidate will be assigned an All India Rank and a percentile score. For instance, a percentile score of 99 implies that the candidate is in the top 1% section of candidates who have attempted GATE. Scorecard is not issued to the candidates who score less than 70 percentile. The score obtained in GATE is valid only for a period of one year. But multiple attempts for GATE can be made to aim for better scores and the best score among all the attempts will be considered during admissions.

Post-GATE Process

After the declarations of the GATE results, the students may apply for admissions in the institutions of their choice. At this point, it’s better to know the statistics and figures related to the institutions before choosing one. The application request is sent directly to the institutions without any mediator in the middle. Different institutions place different percentiles as the cut-off and admit the students. An individual institute may conduct a written test/ interview for admitting the students.

GATE is one of the toughest examinations in India where competition is very high. However, GATE qualified candidates can get scholarships on fulfilling certain conditions. Thus, GATE provides a brilliant platform for students to excel in their group of interests and give their careers a kick start. Good Luck!
