Difference between Job Title and Occupation


There is a wide range of jargons that may be used while talking about work and professions. In fact, it’s a long running joke that just when a person gets to understand the meaning all the different terms used in corporate work environment, new ones crop up replacing the older terms and bringing in newer implications with them.

Occupation, job title, career, and profession are all phrases that describe what a person does for a living. Although there are important distinctions between these two terms, they are often used interchangeably. Some of these terms are used generally, while others are more specific to other occupations.

What is Job Title?

This phrase is used in the context of an employment or a professional role. It provides more information and, more precisely, depicts the job's duties and responsibilities. Financial analyst, administrative officer, software developer, marketing executive, and social media manager are just a handful of the many possible occupations that indicate the scope of work of an employee in a given workplace.

Because of the growth of the internet and other advances, many exciting new job titles have appeared in recent decades. As most of the work went online during pandemic, many job titles were created to suit the demands of working in virtual offices. Take, for instance, the rise in demand for creative talent seen in the job market over the past several years.

The following categories can be used to classify job titles −

  • The responsibilities associated with a certain job are reflected in its naming. Professionals in the managerial, supervisory, directorial, and executive levels are all listed here.

  • Appropriate job titles that describe the work involved. Careers such as "programmer," "mechanic," "accountant," and "housekeeper" fall under this category.

Any activity undertaken for financial gain is encompassed by this term. While not exhaustive, occupations do give some idea of what a person does for a living. However, vocations do not elaborate on a person's day-to-day duties.

Doctor, hotel worker, engineer, educator, caregiver, salesperson, auditor, and marketer are just a handful of the many possible professions that a person can adopt.
