Difference between BorgBase and Mega
BorgBase
BorgBase is a file hosting service that is used for hosting borg repositories.
It's a free and open-source deduplicating backup software made preferably for Unix-based and Mac operating systems backed up by a large and active open-source community.
BorgBase, also known as attic backup software, was developed in 2010 to support a "more open, faster-paced development."
It offers 10 GB of free storage and two repositories for all their clients and provides unlimited storage space for paid clients.
Mainly developed using Python, it supports compression and 256-bit AES client-side encryption to protect all their data.
MEGA
MEGA is a cloud-based service that can be accessed from any device or platform with Internet access. MEGA was created on January 20, 2013, exactly one year after the US government infamously destroyed Megaupload.
It was formed by Kim Dotcom, Mathias Ortmann, and Bram van der Kolk, the same guys who founded Megaupload. Dotcom excelled at marketing and fundraising despite not being engaged in MEGA's design or technical execution. He sold most of his shares and stood down as a Director within a year to pursue new interests.
MEGA is one of the safest clouds available since it uses 128-bit Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) key derived from your password to encrypt and decrypt your files and folders. This means that when a user uploads a file, only the user, not Mega's servers, may decrypt the data. It also contains a security feature that requires two-factor verification, making it safer to use.
MEGA offers 15 GB of permanent free storage and up to 50 GB of storage space including 35 GB of temporary storage to its users. They also provide users with features such as file sharing, file versioning, and secured shared links that open with a key.
MEGA also offers their applications across all platforms and has a maximum storage space of 16 TB.
Clients are also provided with annual transparency reports.
