1 - UK Defence Secretary Michael Fallon resigned
UK Defence Secretary Sir Michael Fallon has resigned admitting that his behavior towards women in the past has “fallen short”. Spokesperson for Sir Michael confirmed that he was once rebuked by a journalist for putting his hand on her knee during a dinner in 2002.
Sir Michael Fallon had an interrupted parliamentary career that spanned four decades and two constituencies. He was previously Deputy Chairman of the Conservative Party (2010 12).
2 - Martina Hingis announced retirement from professional tennis
Swiss great Martina Hingis has announced her retirement from professional tennis. She is the winner of 43 career singles titles and 64 career doubles titles (including 25 career Grand Slam titles across singles, doubles and mixed doubles).
Marina Hingis was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2013. She turned professional in 1994. She had earlier announced retirements in 2003 and 2006, but very soon, she made a comeback. She was named the 1997 BBC Overseas Sports Personality of the Year.
3 - Lebanese Prime Minister announced his resignation
Saad al-Hariri, Prime minister of Lebanese announced his resignation; due to fear for his life from Iran and its Lebanese associate Hezbollah. Saad al-Hariri’s father faced assassination in 2005. Hezbollah is a political leader, who supports Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and Iran and the same has angered some Lebanese, in the past.
Saad al-Hariri also stated in his resignation speech that Iran is interfering in Arab affairs. Saad al-Hariri joined as prime minister in late 2016 and headed a 30-member coalition government.
4 - Sujoy Ghosh resigned as the Jury Head of the 48th International Film Festival of India
Famous director and filmmaker Sujoy Ghosh resigned as Jury Head of the Indian Panorama of 48th International Film Festival of India. The resignation was submitted by the jury head for the reason that the two films selected by jury members were eliminated from final list of screening of films by the Information and Broadcasting Ministry at the 48th IITF.
Sujoy Ghosh is an Indian filmmaker and scriptwriter. He has been associated with movies such as Jhankaar Beats, Kahaani, Aladin, etc. Sujoy Ghosh was the writer of the tagline "Korbo Lorbo Jeetbo Re" for the IPL Team Kolkata Knight Riders.
5 - Bangladesh Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha stepped down
Bangladesh Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha submitted his resignation to President Abdul Hamid. The Supreme Court had recently announced verdict, which scrapped Parliament's powers to remove judges on grounds of misconduct and incapacity. Since the verdict was criticized by the government, Bangladesh Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha stepped down from his duties.
According to the verdict, 16th constitutional amendment invalidates Parliamentary powers to remove judges instead empower the Supreme Judicial Council.
6 - Pakistan's Saeed Ajmal announced retirement from all forms of cricket
Pakistan’s off spinner Saeed Ajmal retired from all forms of cricket. Saeed Ajmal has always achieved many titles during his career. Once upon a time, during his career, he was known as the world's number one bowler in one-day internationals (ODIs) and Twenty20 cricket. Ajmal took 178 wickets in 35 Tests, 184 wickets in 113 ODIs, and 85 in 64 Twenty20 internationals.
He has been winner of 2005 ABN-AMRO Twenty-20 Cup and Sitara-e-Imtiaz by President of Pakistan. He holds record of leading wicket taker.
7 - Janet Yellen to step down from Federal Reserve Board
Janet L. Yellen submitted her resignation as a Member of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, effective upon the swearing in of her successor as Chair.
Prior to her appointment as Chair, Dr. Yellen served as Vice Chair of the Board of Governors, from October 2010 to February 2014, and as President of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, from June 2004 to October 2010. Dr. Yellen is Professor Emerita at the University of California at Berkeley, where she has been a member of the faculty since 1980.
8 - Robert Mugabe resigned as the President of Zimbabwe
Robert Mugabe, who ruled Zimbabwe since independence in 1980 resigned as president. Mr. Mugabe, 93, was the world’s oldest head of state and one of Africa’s longest-serving leaders.
Mugabe led Zimbabwe's fight for independence in the 1970s. His 37-year rule was criticized for repression of dissent, election rigging, and for causing the country's economic collapse. Mnangagwa, 75, the war veteran, Zanu-PF stalwart and former spy chief, will be sworn in to replace Mugabe as the President.
9 - Pakistan’s Law minister Zahid Hamid resigned after anti-blasphemy protests
Pakistan's Law Minister Zahid Hamid has resigned following widespread protests over a perceived softening of the state's position on blasphemy.
Protesters had staged sit-in in Pakistan's capital for about three weeks demanding removal of Law Minister Zahid Hamid for changes in a law related to the Khatm-i-Nabuwwat (finality of prophet hood) oath in the Elections Act 2017. The protesters had blocked the highway connecting the capital Islamabad with Rawalpindi, since the eighth of this month demanding the resignation.
