1 - Indian-American high schooler wins International Geography Bee World Championship

Indian-American high school student Avi Goel has won the world championship at the International Geography Bee's junior varsity division which was held in Berlin. 14-year old Avi won a gold medal in seven out of the 10 medal events, and a silver medal in two of the events, topping the overall medals table.

Avi also bagged the top spot in all the three events counting towards the world championship title: the International Geography Exam, the International Geography Showdown, and the International Geography Bee.

President Ram Nath Kovind appointed governors for seven states as per the following details −

  • Satya Pal Malik - Jammu & Kashmir (Replaced NN Vohra)

  • Tathagata Roy - Meghalaya (Replaced Ganga Prasad)

  • Lalji Tandon - Bihar (Replaced Satya Pal Malik)

  • Ganga Prasad - Sikkim (Replaced Shriniwas Patil)

  • Kaptan Singh Solanki - Tripura (Replaced Tathagata Roy)

  • Satyadev Narayan Arya - Haryana (Replaced Kaptan Singh Solanki)

  • Baby Rani Maurya - Uttarakhand (Replaced K K Paul)

3 - PV Sindhu world's seventh highest paid female athlete

According to Forbes list of highest paid female athletes 2018, Serena Williams was the highest paid female athlete for a third consecutive year in 2018. Indian badminton player P.V. Sindhu ($8.5 million) was 7th in the rank.

Dane Caroline Wozniacki was second on the list. Sloane Stephens, Garbine Muguruza and Maria Sharapova rounded out the top five. Eight out of ten of the world's highest-paid female athletes are tennis players.

4 - Satya S Tripathi appointed as Assistant Secretary-General & Head of New York office of UNEP

Satya S Tripathi

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres announced the appointment of Satya S. Tripathi of India as Assistant Secretary-General and Head of the New York Office of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). He will succeed Elliott Harris of Trinidad and Tobago.

Since 2017, Satya S. Tripathi served as senior adviser on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development at UNEP. He has worked as Director and Executive Head of the United Nations Office for reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation, senior distinguished fellow on natural resources governance with the World Agroforestry Centre and as economist in Europe, Asia and Africa on sustainable development.
