Syllabus contents of this course:

Unit 5: Non-Conventional Power Plants

  • Solar Power Plant based on: flat plate collector, solar ponds, parabolic solar collector, heliostat, solar chimney, SPV cell based plants: working principal, solar photovoltaic systems, applications
  • Geothermal Plant: superheated steam system, flash type, binary cycle plant.
  • Tidal Power Plant: components, single basin, double basin systems.
  • OTEC Plant: principal of working, Claude cycle, Anderson Cycle.
  • MHD Power Generation : Principal of working, Open Cycle MHD generator, closed cycle MHD generators.
  • Fuel cell : alkaline, acidic, proton-exchange membrane
  • Wind Power Plant : wind availability, wind mills and subsystems, classification of wind turbines, operating characteristics, wind solar hybrid power plants, challenges in commercialization of non-conventional power plants, environmental impacts of NCPP.


  • The said course is a part of syllabus of Final year Mechanical Engineering students of the subject Energy Engineering with unit number V.

    Unit-5 comprises of total 9 video lectures and resource files.

  • To study the importance of Wind energy , their components, types, merits and demerits.
  • To get the basic ideas of Tidal energy and their conversion into electrical energy with various methods
  • To have the basic fundamentals of OTEC , MHD plants, their types etc.
  • To know the importance of Fuel cells in upcoming days
  • To focus on the constraints of commercialization of Renewable Sources of energy
  • To get the idea about environmental impacts of Non Conventional Energy sources if any.

The course is based on Nonconventional Sources of Energy (NCSOEs) and the objectives of learner will be able to

  • Understand the Solar energy concepts , components, applications etc.
  • Workout on types and methodology of solar energy.
  • Learn the concept of Energy conversion from Geothermal, OTEC, MHD plants.
  • Get idea about Wind energy and types of WECs in actual practical applications and hurdles in their installations etc.
  • The importance of Tidal Power plants as base load plants in view of their certainty.
  • Get valuable information regarding use of Fuel cells in Vehicles and strong alternate to conventional fuels.
  • Realize the major hurdles in commercialization of Renewable Sources of energy
  • Know that Renewable sources of energy have also some environmental impacts .
