Functional Play
The Importance of Developing Functional Play Skills
About the Book
Book description
This book was written for parents and caregivers of children with developmental delays, ages birth to three years old.
Children typically begin more in depth exploration of toys between the ages of 12-18 months. Functional play is a powerful tool for the development of the following skills; Social Skills, Problem Solving Skills, Cognitive Skills, and Language and
Communication Skills.
Functional Play skills are not often discussed in the context of speech-language therapy. This book aims to change that by highlighting the importance of functional play skills. In this book, I answer the following questions that many parents have asked me, once they become receptive to learning more about functional play:
1. What is functional play and why is it important?
2. How do I know if my child is demonstrating functional play skills?
3. How can I teach my child how to play with toys appropriately?
Goals
This book is intended for parents/caregivers, teachers, and/or related professionals to understand basic information about functional play skills in young children.
